The Julian Gerstin Sextet features original, audience-friendly jazz with strong Caribbean and Balkan influences built on clarinet, trumpet, piano, bass, drums, and a wide range of world percussion instruments. Their first CD, "The One Who Makes You Happy," has was released in 2017. Bandleader Julian Gerstin crafts compositions based on his experiences living in the Caribbean and working with musicians from Martinique, Cuba, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and Brazil. Clarinetist extraordinaire Anna Patton has studied in Bulgaria and Macedonia, and also leads the contradance band Elixir. Pianist Eugene Uman contributes the influences of Colombia as well as jazz and rock, even having backed up Bo Diddley. Bassist Wes Brown cut his professional teeth with jazz legend Earl "Fatha" Hines, and drummer Ben James has appeared with saxophone legend John Tchicai as well as Nels Kline and Camper van Beethoven. Creative improvisation, surprising rhythms, and heartfelt melodies combine to form this supergroup.
